Obituary

Mrs. Alice Marie Hunter Schumpert was born in Ora, South Carolina, on May 9, 1950, to Oberon “Bub” and Carrie Estella Richardson Hunter. She departed this life on Friday, August 28, 2026, surrounded by her devoted husband and her two dearly loved daughters.

Alice was educated in Laurens County Public Schools and graduated from Sanders High School in 1968. Following graduation, Henry Schumpert and Alice wed on November 27, 1971; and after much prayer and exceptional faith and fortitude, their union was blessed by Patience Elise and Precious Danielle. Alice adored her husband and especially her girls, whom she affectionately called her ”Tootie Fruit” and “Sunshine”. Their story and fifty-four years of ministry and service together in Enoree, SC, blessed the entire community.

The sixth of eight children, Alice learned the value of commitment to family, education, hard work and letting her light shine early in life. She boldly served God and maximized every opportunity to lift others, especially children. Alice loved Jesus with all her heart, mind, and soul; and she became a strong advocate for the least and the lost. Her talk, her walk and her deeds glorified the lord as she shared her personal testimony. Conversations with her ended with a genuine, “I love you.”

Alice worked at Enro Shirt Factory and Jostens for many years; however, she found her “perfect place” in Spartanburg District Four. There she served as a kindergarten class aide and bus driver to be closer to and more available to her children and family. After retirement, she continued her passion to work with children as a part-time employee at Kiddie Korner Daycare in Woodruff, SC.

Service to others was central to Alice’s remarkable life. She served in numerous capacities with excellence. As a member of Flat Ruff Baptist Church, she was a Sunday School Teacher for primary aged children, Vacation Bible School Teacher, Deaconess, Missionary President, Pulpit Aide, and a member of the Benevolent Committee. Several years ago, she founded the Sympathy Club to provide support during the loss of a loved one.

Alice blessed everyone with her powerful, spirit-filled tenor voice. She was a longtime leader and choir member of the Flat Ruff Baptist Church choirs and the United Voices for Christ Mass Choir. She was a devoted, proud member of the Tumbling Shoals Baptist Association for Union #1. She carried Tumbling Shoals in her heart through and through, serving as Missionary President, Women’s Auxiliary and Treasurer of the Trustee Board. Alice also served several organizations and charities: Relay for Life Captain, Laurens Hospice House, Laurens County Disability and Special Needs, and Laurens Safe Home. She was a member of Sunshine Chapter #62 Order of the Eastern Star, Newberry Aide Society, and Chaplain for the National Council of Negro Women, Laurens County Section (SCO13).

With limited leisure time, Alice enjoyed completing word search puzzles, eating at the fish camp, eating cold chunks of watermelon or a Klondike bar, and celebrating special events with her husband, daughters and sons-in-law. She intentionally made time to support activities involving her siblings and their children.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her siblings: Bobby Hunter, Billy Hunter, and Connie Young as well as several in-laws and other relatives.

Alice's joyful spirit and legacy will live on through her husband, Deacon Henry L. Schumpert; daughters, Dr. Patience S. Bolden (Kenny) and Precious S. Daugherty (Nick); four siblings: Bennie Joe Hunter, Geraldine Jones, Gracie White and Roger Leon Hunter; in-laws, Maxine Massey Hunter and Alfred Young, Jr. and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
